November Meet Remembered

What a great day our November meet was!  A little bit of snow after everyone arrived, an absolutely wonderful host church, and a great day of quizzing.

Thank you Ravenna, from teams to members of the church gave your Saturday to bless a bunch of kids with an opportunity to quiz and some great food.  I hope you were as blessed to be there as much as you blessed our teams, it was an honor to be there.

Thank you teams and coaches, for continuing to train new officials and especially new Quizmasters.  You probably noticed, but I did ask for any Quizmasters at the last minute, because not only did we have enough on Friday to schedule to quiz but I had extra Quizmasters on Saturday that were ready if needed.  Thank you for training, THANK YOU OFFICIALS for being such a huge part of our meets and I'm sure the ongoing practices at your churches.

Looking ahead to our next meet, we have a bit of an extra break, but both B and C leagues are adding questions for the next meet, so while you do so enjoy a Christmas break from Quiz meets, don't take one completely from Quiz.  We look forward to coming back in January for a great meet and seeing each quizzer and team improving their experience at the meet.

Our January meet will be hosted at New Life in Poland and our February meet will be hosted at Celebration Church in Akron.  Links at the top right will give you links to direction pages for these churches.

Technological Advances

JBQ has advancements in two technological (perhaps geeky) areas of life.

1.  Gospel Publishing has copies of the JBQ programs available again after I'm not sure how long they've been out of stock, Click HERE to check it out.  This is still version 1.5, which is still the current version that was out.  The new version (2.0 likely) is still being worked on for release.

2.  JBQ has arrived on the iPhone.  If you search JBQuiz (or JBQ) you will find a program that was released on Tuesday.  it has all of the JBQ questions, which can be accessed by point value or as in a match, it also has both end of question 5 second timers and 30 second answer timers built in.  However, this initial version does not allow you to search or designate particular questions for review, just generates from the whole set.  Still, it may be of help and there should be updates that hopefully could address those areas.  So if you have an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, there ya go!  If you have an old one you'd like to give away, let me know!  :)

Officials Training dates

Whether it's your 1st year or 41st year, we ask everyone who is officiating this year to go through officials training in order to refresh, understand, and bring you up to speed on any changes.  There are a couple of options for this training.  What these tests are designed to do is not so much test you on what you know about the rules, but to bring about comprehension of the rules and how to apply them to matches for everyone's benefit.

This year we have two opportunities to gather and go through this training in groups; to discuss and bring understanding to the rules and how they are processed in a match.

Our two training sessions will be September 18th and 25th.  One is more to the east side of our section and one more to the west.
September 18th-
Location: New Life Church in Poland
2250 E Western Reserve Rd
Poland OH 44514 (may show on GPS as Youngstown)
330.757.0727
-Will be held in the prayer room, which is at the back of the building (from the road), top of the hill.  There is parking up there and will be marked.  Note- there is a food give out going on that morning as well, so most of the lower areas of the parking lot will be full.

September 25th-
Location: First Assembly of Louisville
1921 West Main Street
Louisville, OH 44641-2340
(330) 875-5883
-details to follow

Both training sessions will begin at 9am and end by 11am and I will cover the same material and format, so whichever time and location better fits your schedule.
RSVP is not necessary, but recommended to help with preparation of materials and seating.

Remember, each team that quizzes needs to bring 2 officials per team for each meet.  Teams earn bonus points for our sectional meets, 10 per official brought.

In October we will be running a test run with rotating officials, where only the QuizMaster will be staying in the same room and the other officials will travel with your team and officiate in the room with your team.

Changes to the C-league Question Schedule

The C-league question sequence has been changed and is now the same question sequence as last year and goes along with the same sequence for A & B leagues from last year as well.

October and November meets
o They will quiz over questions 1-72, 289-336, & 481-504
 January and February
o They will quiz over questions 1-144, 289-384, & 481-528

This is the opposite of the previous post, this change was just announced today.  We are sorry for any confusion and hope that this has been caught early enough for teams to change their practice plans.

Recap of the Great Lakes Regional

The Great Lakes Regional has come and gone and it was a great event.  The top 20 teams from the Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Appalachia Districts came together and quizzed 2 days, (19 rounds! yipes).

Ohio had all four of it's Top-4 go and participate in the meet looking for Nationals Qualification.  What they found was a very competitive group.  The Great Lakes Region has the honor of being the toughest Region in the country, based on last year's Nationals Results.  (Teams from our region placed higher cumulatively than teams from any other region.)

But Ohio did not disappoint and what we ended up with was all 4 of our Top-4 placing high enough to qualify for Nationals with Dayspring (Bowling Green) taking 3rd in the whole tournament!   So we say congratulations to Dayspring, Poland, Cincinnati 1st, & Destiny (Dayton) on a great tournament.  You have honored the churches and teams of Ohio with your great play and greater examples of sportsmanship and Christ-like attitudes.  Click HERE for full Regional Results

As the Holy Spirit leads, if you would remember these teams in prayer and lift them up, that the rest of their expenses and preparation for the National Meet (June 10-12).

A point correction for our B-League totals due to 2 quizzers being swapped on the score sheet has changed our Top-10 for the B-league for the Feb. Meet.  This has led to a tie at 3rd place, and the following quizzers moving up one in the standings.  This means that we unfortunately did not get to properly recognize Nate Heath, our 10th place quizzer for February's meet.  Congratulations Nate!

A Look ahead at the 2010 State Meet

The regular season over and the post-season is upon us.

The 2010 Ohio State Meet will be held, Friday and Saturday, March 19-20th in Toledo, hosted by Toledo's Calvary Assembly of God.

To link to their website, click HERE
To link to google maps for directions, click HERE

Steps to State Meet:
1) Decide on who's going?
2) Register your team(s)
3) Make your reservations for hotel and travel

1) Decide Who's Going?
--A and B league quizzers are eligible for the State Meet.  C-league quizzers in 1st grade are eligible upon the ruling of the team's coaching staff, and must move to a B or A league team.  There is no C-league quiz level at the State Meet.

2) Register Your Team(s)
Registration is open and ongoing for teams.  Here's a few things that you'll need when registering:
a. go to the Ohio Ministry Network's website for JBQ and click State Meet Registration
b. registration is online with a credit card only, $55 per team.
c. Contact information for team and coach needed
d. Quizzers, age, years quizzing, grade and age
e. If quizzers have earned any seal awards (Achiever, Discover, Searcher, or Master) during this season (or since the 2009 State Meet), mark that on registration for each quizzer.  If quizzers have reached the almost impossible, the impossible seal or reached the 107 club, please email Becky HERE to giver her the quizzers' name and information.
f. 2 Officials are required for each team.  Their names, positions that they are able to hold and number of years of experience are all areas to fill in.
**To ensure the very best quizzing for each of the levels of quiz, and to ensure that we place officials into levels of quiz that they are prepared for, we are asking that each official take the online training through the website.   This takes about 30-45 minutes and will help officials to be as best prepared for situations they will face in quiz matches.  NOTE: If your officials have taken this earlier this season, they do not need to retake it.  Officials training log-in information is found on the ohioag.org/jbq page directly below the State Meet Information.

3) Make Your Hotel and Travel Arrangements.
a. Because of the large number of teams that participate in the State Meet, a number of local hotels have special rates and deals in partnering with the event.  To see all the available Hotel Information, click HERE
b. Official check-in for the State Meet opens at 1pm on Friday the 19th.  Orientation for the Meet begins at 1.30pm with quizzing to begin right after.
c. Teams will quiz approximately 8 matches Friday night.  Saturday check-in will begin at 8am with quizzing starting at approximately 8.30am.

February Meet

Friday-29th UPDATE: Lunch to purchase at the February Meet will be a choice of pizza (double cheese or pepperoni) or hotdogs.  These will both come with chips and a drink for $4.  Snacks will also be available.
To help in Painesville's preparation to have enough for everyone who wants it, if you know how many will be eating, please let me know a head-count.  If you know a breakdown of pizza v hot dogs that's even better.  Just let me know and I'll pass it to Painesville.
When you arrive, you will be able to place orders and pay for lunches in the morning to help move things along smoothly during the lunches.

Our February Meet is fast approaching and as our final sectional meet of the season, brings a few scheduling changes.

1) At the end of the day, we will have awards for both the Feb meet, but also for the overall season in the NE Section which will involve tallying points throughout the day, and will give us about a 60 minute break between the final round and the award presentation.

2) Our schedule for the day will be posted prior to the meet.  We will add a few rounds to the day to make up for January's meet as well as lunch breaks and the 2nd break at the end of quizzing.

3) {Change}At 9.10am we will gather all OFFICIALS for Directions/Assignments, but NOT everyone for awards/info, and will hold the November awards till the end of the day to help move through the rest of the day.  Someone will be available for questions/directions in the entrance area.

Snow note: Though there is still a chance of snow in northern Ohio in February, it is highly unlikely that we will cancel this meet, as it is our last of the season.  If snow becomes a factor, it may be delayed a couple hours to allow roads to clear and the number of rounds shortened, but not cancelled.  A determination would be made Thursday night or Friday morning before.

Finally, thanks to Painesville Assembly, Pastor Carrie and Heather Jarrell and to everyone for hosting.  For directions, you can click here for the Painesville direction page or here, for Google maps with their address plugged in.

January Meet Canceled

It's a bit ahead of the planned announcement schedule, and a bummer in a lot of ways, but all the signs from the weather guessers are quite confidently pointing to the majority of snowfall Friday will coming after sunset with some of the heaviest amounts will falling in the center of our section, meaning that even if snowfall and roads are decent where you start, they are sure to get nasty as you travel to the meet in Lowellville.

Had the snowfall been tracking more to daylight hours today we could have watched and waited a bit longer, but rather than have everyone waiting through the night and wondering, best to get it decided on now.

Thank you coaches, parents and pastors for your feedback, ideas and patience in this decision.  The value of the meet is great, but the safety of all our families is greater.  I look forward to a rocking February meet and we'll see if we can spice some things up then to help make up for missing this month.
Blessings!

January Meet and the Snow

Winter Weather alerts are in effect for the next few days, including Saturday for the January meet throughout the NE section of Ohio.  We want to have a great meet certainly, but we want all the teams and families to be safe to and from the meet, which is more important than the meet itself.  So, we will be monitoring the snowfall, road conditions and weather throughout the section leading up to the meet.

A preliminary decision will be made at approximately 5pm Friday evening, followed by updates every 3 hours (approx).  A final decision will be made approximately 5-6am.
*Should the decision to cancel be made at anytime, there will not be a reversal to have it.
*At this time, the meet is still scheduled on.
*It is possible that teams that feel they could make it could still quiz in an exhibition meet that would not count towards the overall season standings.

Teams/Coaches, please feel free to post weather and road conditions in your area in the comments to this post, these will help us know what local and national outlets are saying about the snow.
