Friday-29th UPDATE: Lunch to purchase at the February Meet will be a choice of pizza (double cheese or pepperoni) or hotdogs. These will both come with chips and a drink for $4. Snacks will also be available.
To help in Painesville's preparation to have enough for everyone who wants it, if you know how many will be eating, please let me know a head-count. If you know a breakdown of pizza v hot dogs that's even better. Just let me know and I'll pass it to Painesville.
When you arrive, you will be able to place orders and pay for lunches in the morning to help move things along smoothly during the lunches.
Our February Meet is fast approaching and as our final sectional meet of the season, brings a few scheduling changes.
1) At the end of the day, we will have awards for both the Feb meet, but also for the overall season in the NE Section which will involve tallying points throughout the day, and will give us about a 60 minute break between the final round and the award presentation.
2) Our schedule for the day will be posted prior to the meet. We will add a few rounds to the day to make up for January's meet as well as lunch breaks and the 2nd break at the end of quizzing.
3) {Change}At 9.10am we will gather all OFFICIALS for Directions/Assignments, but NOT everyone for awards/info, and will hold the November awards till the end of the day to help move through the rest of the day. Someone will be available for questions/directions in the entrance area.
Snow note: Though there is still a chance of snow in northern Ohio in February, it is highly unlikely that we will cancel this meet, as it is our last of the season. If snow becomes a factor, it may be delayed a couple hours to allow roads to clear and the number of rounds shortened, but not cancelled. A determination would be made Thursday night or Friday morning before.

January Meet Canceled
It's a bit ahead of the planned announcement schedule, and a bummer in a lot of ways, but all the signs from the weather guessers are quite confidently pointing to the majority of snowfall Friday will coming after sunset with some of the heaviest amounts will falling in the center of our section, meaning that even if snowfall and roads are decent where you start, they are sure to get nasty as you travel to the meet in Lowellville.
Had the snowfall been tracking more to daylight hours today we could have watched and waited a bit longer, but rather than have everyone waiting through the night and wondering, best to get it decided on now.
Thank you coaches, parents and pastors for your feedback, ideas and patience in this decision. The value of the meet is great, but the safety of all our families is greater. I look forward to a rocking February meet and we'll see if we can spice some things up then to help make up for missing this month.

January Meet and the Snow
Winter Weather alerts are in effect for the next few days, including Saturday for the January meet throughout the NE section of Ohio. We want to have a great meet certainly, but we want all the teams and families to be safe to and from the meet, which is more important than the meet itself. So, we will be monitoring the snowfall, road conditions and weather throughout the section leading up to the meet.
A preliminary decision will be made at approximately 5pm Friday evening, followed by updates every 3 hours (approx). A final decision will be made approximately 5-6am.
*Should the decision to cancel be made at anytime, there will not be a reversal to have it.
*At this time, the meet is still scheduled on.
*It is possible that teams that feel they could make it could still quiz in an exhibition meet that would not count towards the overall season standings.
Teams/Coaches, please feel free to post weather and road conditions in your area in the comments to this post, these will help us know what local and national outlets are saying about the snow.

November Results

Well, there was a sea of red on Saturday. (I suppose there should be some pun there about it being divided by the vocal fans wearing blue and maize...naah...)
It's time to take a look at the stats. It was a great day of quizzing. Competition heated up between teams as quizzers, with an extra month of practice under their belts drew closer our leaders in all the leagues.
Thanks again to Celebration and to Pastor Tracy and her team for blessing us with hosting.

Team Names
One of those things that I forgot in earlier followup from last meet was about Team Names. Many of our teams have names that are more descriptive and personal to their teams personality and makeup than just their church name and a league number (Church A1 or Church B2). So if you have a team name beyond your Church name and would like to have that on Score Sheets and Rosters, please let me know and we will get that on the schedule. Let your team's personality shine! Get the quizzers involved. Let them come up with ideas and then vote on the ones you think best inspire them.

Notes about a couple issues from last meet
In preparation for our next meet, we wanted to mention a couple issues that gave some headaches to teams and QuizMasters last month, in hopes of helping to remedy them.
QuizMasters:
You set the tone for the matches. Be pleasant and positive. While this should be an enjoyable time for the quizzers, remember that you are also running the matches and should be fair and objective to each team but not become too familiar with them, especially if you know the team or quizzers personally. You should also enjoy your time in the matches, but remember that you have a serious position responsible for two teams quiz match.
When in doubt, rule in favor of the quizzer. If you find yourself in an unusual situation or unable to find how to handle a situation or ruling, do not hesitate to consult the League Coordinator.
Teams and Quizzers do not need to identify which version they are quoting when they do so in a match. It is a good idea to ask them beforehand so you are aware. A number of teams are utilizing name-cards in front of each quizzer with their name and version on it. Remember that they are not penalized for not identifying the version, it is on the officials to find this out and prepare in advance. Teams are encouraged to help themselves by making sure that officials know however.
While a quizzer who is answering a question is NOT penalized for mispronouncing a word, when it is still identifiable, when QuizMasters mispronounce a word in the reading of the question it needs to be voided and reread for all quizzers who were eligible. It's really about the kids with this. If you can pre-read the questions to make sure you know the words and still read the question in a consistent and clear way that's great. One of the last pages in the JBQ rulebook is also a pronunciation guide for words used in the questions. Each match has substitute questions for you to use if needed and mispronunciations happen, but whatever we can do to be fair to all quizzers and lessen the possibility of these is a win for all.
Many teams and officials are used to hearing the term appeals. This term's meaning has changed from past years, and what it is is an appeal for Judges Ruling. A Judges Ruling is a asked by a head coach for the 3 Judges to vote when the initial ruling was done by the QuizMaster independently. The Coach has 30 seconds to state why they are asking for this ruling before the 3 Judges vote without conference. If the decision is unanimous it is announced by the QuizMaster. If it is not, the Judges may confer briefly before voting again. This 2nd vote does not need to be unanimous and the QuizMaster announces the decision.
Again, if you find yourself in a situation that you are unsure how to handle, it is OK to call an Official Time-out and consult the rules or the League Coordinator so that we handle everything properly and fairly for all quizzers.
ScoreKeepers:
There were several instances when there was a problem with the final tally based on a negative score at some point in the match. It will help everyone if you circle any negative point value. Also, be cautious of Fouls. Fouls that go against a specific quizzer go in their scoring column and come off their individual score at the end of the match. Team Fouls need to be marked at the top of the team scoring column for the question and come off the total team score, not any individual quizzer's points. Whenever a Foul is marked, it is easiest to mark with a capital F and circle it. All Fouls are negative five (-5) points.
Make sure that both coaches check scores and initial next to their team's final score. Once signed, they are confirming that the score is correct so it is to their benefit and that of their quizzers to make sure this is correct.
Scoresheets are kept with the QuizMaster Packet and given to the League Coordinator at the end of the Quizzing Day.
There will be a Roster sheet for all teams in the QuizMaster Packet. Please use this and confirm names with each team as to who is quizzing in each seat and that their names are correct on the scoresheet.
